Find New Sales Opportunities by Selling Internationally

By Aron Hsiao  on July 18, 2016

More and more online sellers are selling internationally, and eBay is one of the easiest marketplaces through which to make international sales. Why sell internationally? There are a few good reasons:

  • It's easier and more hassle-free now than it's ever been before

  • Products can have significantly different values in different markets

  • Demand can vary significantly between markets as well

  • Under eBay's Global Shipping Program, you don't even have to ship internationally; eBay will do it for you

If you've considered selling internationally but aren't sure how to get started, here's a crash course. It's actually pretty short because there isn't much to it any longer. First, quickly scan these two eBay resources:

Next, follow some simple steps.

To Sell Directly on International eBay Sites

To create listings directly on international eBay sites and sell to shoppers in those regions, scroll to the bottom of eBay's website and click on the country button, as shown below. Note that if you're logged in and use eBay's "Feed", you'll first have to click on the "Legal, Privacy & More" tab at your browser's lower-right.

Select an international marketplace (you may have to click on the "Legal, Privacy, &More" tab).

Select an eBay marketplace. Then, after the new eBay site loads, click on the "Sell" button just as you normally would and create your listing. Believe it or not, that's all there is to it.

For maximum sales potential on non-English speaking websites, have a friend or even Google Translate help you present your listing in the local language, as well as in English.

To Offer to Ship to International Shoppers on

On the eBay selling form, click "Create" to create a new shipping policy.

If you're not quite ready to list directly on eBay marketplaces around the globe, fear not—there are a large number of international shoppers that regularly frequent To sell to them, you simply need to opt to offer shipping to other regions on eBay's selling form. Here's how.

  1. Find the "Shipping policy" area of the selling form.

  2. Click on the "Create" button to create a new shipping policy (see image at right).

  3. When the shipping policy pop-up appears, scroll down until you see the "International shipping" section.

  4. Choose either to make your product available under the Global Shipping Program or enter shipping costs for other regions one at a time (see below).

For international shipping, check the "Sell globally" box and/or add international shipping options.

If you make an international sale under the Global Shipping Program, simply follow the directions that eBay provides to you after the sale. If you've opted to add additional shipping policies, label and ship just as you normally would.

That's all there is to it, either way. PayPal handles the currency conversion for you, so that you still get paid in exactly the way you'd expect, and with modern shipment tracking and ever-safer modern shipping methods, it's easy to watch your package until it arrives at its international destination.

Making the Most of International Sales

As usual, marketplace research can help you to achieve the highest possible sales volume and greatest possible profits—and Terapeak is the best way to do this kind of research.

Select the international view (see below) when you're doing product research on Terapeak to get detailed data on the international sales potential of products or items you're offering.

The international view shows average sale prices and sell-through rates on global eBay sites.

The upper part of international research results show average price and sell-through rate breakdowns for key global eBay marketplaces.

The lower part of international research results breaks sales down by pie charts that show the number of successful listings by region, how buyers for the product are spread around the globe, and the most popular eBay sites where sales occur—along with additional general statistics.

Pie charts show buyer country and global marketplace sales distributions.

Armed with Terapeak data on demand, average prices, and sell-through rates around the world, and with eBay and PayPal onboard to make international sales as easy as possible for you, there's little reason any longer not to make international marketplace research and international selling a regular part of your business.

Research a full year of online sales in detail for any product or keyword—top global markets, average prices, sell-through rates, top listings, and more!
